The Central Coast's history begins with the Darkinjung, Guringai, Awabakal, and Kuringgai peoples, followed by 19th-century European settlement focused on Brisbane Water, timber, shipbuilding, and agriculture, and eventually evolves into the modern region formed by the 2016 council amalgamation.
Darkinjung people — inland and western Central Coast custodians
Guringai people — coastal custodians from Broken Bay to Lake Macquarie
Awabakal people — northern and Lake Macquarie region
Kuringgai people — first to encounter British settlers in the region
These groups maintained deep connections to Country through rock engravings, shell middens, ceremonial sites, and extensive cultural landscapes.
One notable historical figure is Bungaree, a Kuringgai man who befriended early governors and accompanied Matthew Flinders in the first circumnavigation of Australia.
1788–1789: Governor Arthur Phillip explored Broken Bay and the tributary later known as Brisbane Water.
1796: Tuggerah Lakes were first documented by shipwrecked fishermen.
1811: Governor Macquarie granted the first land in the region to William Nash.
1823–1828: Early settlers such as James Webb (Brisbane Water), William Cape (Wyong), John Gray (Terrigal), and Henry Holden (The Entrance) established farms, timber operations, and shipbuilding.
Shipbuilding became a major industry in Brisbane Water, continuing until the mid-1950s.
1839: Gosford named after the Earl of Gosford.
1840s–1850s: Early governance attempts through the Brisbane Water Police District and District Council.
1865–1887: Establishment of Gosford Public School, Gosford Post & Telegraph Office, and Gosford Railway Station.
1889: Railway bridge across the Hawkesbury River connected the region to Sydney, accelerating growth.
Tourism began emerging in the late 1800s, with guesthouses opening in The Entrance and coastal villages.
1936: Municipality of Gosford re-established, expanding local governance.
1938–1939: Town water supply introduced; Gosford Council Chambers opened.
1942: Gosford, Erina, and Woy Woy Shires formed the Brisbane Water County Council to provide electricity.
The region continued to grow through agriculture, fishing, tourism, and suburban expansion.
On 12 May 2016, Gosford City Council and Wyong Shire Council merged to form the Central Coast Council, creating a single local government area covering 1,681 km² and serving over 331,000 residents.
Today, the Central Coast is known for its coastal towns, national parks, waterways, and peri-urban lifestyle, positioned between Sydney and Newcastle.
